Sustainability

As a pioneer in German chain catering, fast-casual dining and the production of high-quality convenience foods, we strive to contribute to ensuring food security within planetary boundaries.

We have developed a comprehensive, high-quality product range that we continuously evaluate and adapt based on sustainability criteria. A sustainability assessment is an integral part of our product development and management to ensure the highest process quality from the outset. Our focus is on increasing resource efficiency from production right through to disposal.

TRANSPARENCY AND EFFICIENCY FROM PRODUCTION TO DISPOSAL.

Our purchasing experts consistently pursue an integrative, sustainable purchasing strategy.

This approach continually enhances the quality of agricultural products, enables fairer prices for our producers and builds trust with our partners along the entire supply chain.

When it comes to the environment, we set standards in production, packaging and transportation.

We have been using exclusively green electricity since 2021. In terms of energy management, we have been certified to the ISO 50001 standard since 2014 and save 1.5% energy per tonne of finished goods produced every year. A significant milestone is our combined heat and power plant, which generates both electrical energy and heat, achieving a degree of heat recovery utilisation of over 90%.

Constantly optimising the environmental compatibility of our packaging is a top priority. We find solutions to minimise food waste by portioning food according to need, and we compensate for the resulting increase in packaging requirements with sophisticated recycling concepts. This has enabled us to continuously reduce the ecological impact of the increased packaging requirements.

We shorten supply chains by regionalising our purchasing, thereby reducing the burden on our environment. Our refrigerated forwarders are carefully selected based on CO2 balance criteria. Our own logistics system achieves an annual fuel saving of 5% per outgoing consignment. In 2021, total emissions from Block logistics were reduced by 7%.

ALMOST ALL OF THE INGREDIENTS IN THE BLOCK MENÜ COME FROM THE REGION.

That is why we launched our own regional cattle breeding programme in 2014. Our commitment to the region significantly contributes to the preservation of the Uckermärker and Angus cattle breeds.

Our venison sour roast is an excellent example of using other regional meats: it is produced in a local game processing plant, with our partner’s suppliers being regional hunters and forestry offices.

VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN ALTERNATIVES OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY.

Some delicious examples of our success are our pea protein stew with vegetables and teriyaki sauce, our vegan curry, our chilli sin carne and our vegan Bolognese.
